Carl
Friedlander was born in Chicago, Illinois. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science
and for many years worked in that field as a researcher. In 2000, Carl began
weaving after treatments for brain cancer left him less able to express himself
verbally while enhancing his ability to express himself artistically. He
works with wool, wool and silk blends, cotton and chenille to make Jewish
prayer shawls, scarves, men and women’s clothing as well
as everyday items such as placemats and coasters. His specialty is double weave.
Since 2009, Carl has been an Artist-in-Residence at Studio Channel Islands
Art Center where he weaves, teaches classes and exhibits his work.
