I have been attracted to the Armenian knotted lace since the early 80’s when I was in Art-technical College in Armenia. This art form existed thousands of years in every household in Armenian culture where young girls learned the techniques of lace making at home to adorn their dowries. The mesmerizing beauty and delicacy of Armenian lace keeps me inspired to create new pieces.
Currently a handful of women make lace in Armenia. Maybe that is another reason I still make this very time consuming art form to conserve it. Creatively, I found a connection between delicate stone carvings on Armenian churches and Cross Stones. I get inspired by intricate designs on the stones and translate them into lace designs, trying to create new stitches that I have not seen before. Also, I am interested in the symbol meanings of the designs used in lace and other textiles. Most of the symbol meanings are lost but some have survived. A few years ago, I started doing research in hopes of restoring those symbols back to where they belong.
